Ezekiel 17:7-8, NKJV

“But there was another great eagle with large wings and many feathers; And behold, this vine bent its roots toward him, And stretched its branches toward him, From the garden terrace where it had been planted, That he might water it. It was planted in good soil by many waters, To bring forth branches, bear fruit, And become a majestic vine.”

Reflection - Barbara Shaffer, First United Church of Christ, Royersford

I love gardening! It is so much fun to look at the beautiful gardening catalogues and imagine how your garden will look. Last year, however, I lost some large bushes because of the drought and the fact that their roots did not receive enough water.

Roots inform us of the plant’s general health. Are they getting the correct nourishment and water? Are they buried at the correct depth? Are there air pockets? There will be an indication in the plant if these facts are not correct.

In today’s text, God has an allegory for the Israelite situation. In it they have been planted correctly with plenty of nutrients and water. Instead of being grateful, their kind turns to Egypt for help to overthrow Babylonians They’ve already broken their covenant with God and now their oath with the Babylonian king. We can tell this because their roots have turned toward Egypt. It will not end well for the Israelites.

While preparing for spring and Easter, we have the opportunity to get our roots firmly planted in God. It can start by being grateful. The Israelite king was not grateful and did not give thanks for their situation and all that God had given them. Then we might try other paths to make our root system firmer. These might include prayers, fasting, reading scripture, memorizing scripture, meditation, attending worship, and offering our services to others. God will provide the nourishment and the water. We just need to make our roots firm.

Prayer: Loving Father, thank you for this time to get closer to you. Thank you for your grace through Jesus and the many blessings you’ve given us. Help us in our intentionality and guide our paths. Amen.
