Living Water

On the last day of the festival, the great day, while Jesus was standing there, he cried out, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me, and let the one who believes in me drink. As the scripture has said, ‘Out of the believer’s heart shall flow rivers of living water.’ ” ~ John 7:37-38

There are many images and metaphors scripture gives us about Jesus, but for me, Living water just might be the most helpful.

Because water is something we can't live without. We can live sometimes up to three weeks without food, but only three to five days without water.

It literally is life. I grew up in Texas and can remember when I was a kid losing our air conditioning one summer. The coolness of water became precious - water to drink, cool showers, playing in the sprinkler, visiting the local pool, cool compresses on my head as I tried to fall asleep.

Water is the fundamental building block life. Every living thing on earth is comprised of H2O.

So when Jesus calls us to drink of his living water, he is inviting us to life itself.

And when we drink, we are meant to become water for others.

Water is life. Jesus is life, and we are meant to drink our fill and then share that life with others.

Holy One, let your waters spring forth from me to be a conduit for life. Amen
