One Body

For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. ~ I Corinthians 12:12-13

In our individualistic society, this bears repeating over and over again: we are one.

In our church it bears repeating. We are one body.

We are Christ's body.

We are one.

In all my years being part of a church community, or leading in a church community, this seems to often be the thing that we forget the most.

I exist not just for myself. You exist not just for yourself. We exist for each other. And we exist for Christ.

In the secular world, this disengagement from each other has led to all kinds of tragic consequences.

In our churches, this disengagement leads to forgetting that we all have a part to play in sharing the good news and for the ministry of the church. We do not exist in isolation from each other and Sunday mornings are not the only time we are called to be together.

You are an important member of the body. What part are you being called to play?

We are One in, with, and through you, O Lord. Move me to play the role in which you have called me. Amen
