I waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
He drew me up from the desolate pit,
out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
making my steps secure. ~ Psalm 40:1-2

Many people who know me know that Psalm 40 has special meaning to me because U2 based on of their songs on it - with words that really inspired me.
I'll admit though that sometimes the words don't hit as well as other times. Sometimes I still feel like I'm in the pit.
Or maybe more precisely the miry bog. Because often that what it feels like when I am afraid or anxious. The world just seems foggy. Murky.
Maybe you feel that way sometimes. Or you feel like you are walking slowly through sludge. It hampers progress. It keeps footsteps from being secure. It makes them unsteady.
And then I WANT to have my feet on a rock.
I'm not sure what might be happening in your own life right now. Maybe there is something that makes you feel like you are in a pit. Or a miry bog. Maybe you feel like you are walking through sludge and can't get your footsteps secure.
If you are feeling that way, you aren't alone. Way back to the Psalmist people have joined you there.
And often it is through those people - the ones who know what it is like to feel stuck in a pit or bog - that God sends to draw you out.
Holy God, thank you for the people you send to bring me hope. Help me to trust always that you don't want me to be stuck and instead want life abundant for me. Amen
