Paraclete

(Jesus said to the disciples),“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you.

“I will not leave you orphaned; I am coming to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me; because I live, you also will live. On that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. They who have my commandments and keep them are those who love me; and those who love me will be loved by my Father, and I will love them and reveal myself to them.” ~ John 14:15-21

The Greek word used here translated as "Advocate" is "paraclete."

It's a word that in addition to advocate also means: comforter, helper, consoler, counselor, intercessor.

It's a word that through Jesus has also come to mean "Holy Spirit."

In essence, "paraclete" gives us the job description of the Holy Spirit.

An advocate who speaks for you with God.

A comforter who soothes your hurts.

A helper who guides you along new and unexpected paths.

A consoler who wipes your tears.

A counselor who advises you and moves you to action.

An intercessor who prays with and for you.

The paraclete is our companion on our journey of faith. It is our promise that we are never without God. Never separated from God. Never left to our own devices.

Never alone.

Come Holy Spirit! Come and be my companion Amen
