The Light Comes into the World

And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High,

for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,

to give his people knowledge of salvation

by the forgiveness of their sins.

Because of the tender mercy of our God,

the dawn from on high will break upon us,

to shine upon those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,

to guide our feet into the way of peace.” ~ Luke 1:76-79

Zechariah sang to his son who had not yet been born.

He sang of the promise and the blessing that would come.

He sang of the reality of God's tender mercy: God's desire for life and grace.

He sang of his son's role in the coming of the light.

That this babe would grow to be the man who shined a spotlight on the light itself.

Sometimes we miss the light even when it is shining right in front of us. What is it they say? We can't see our nose despite our face? We miss the forest for the trees?

And in those times, we need someone to point us the way. To show us that there is light in our darkness. The darkness hasn't completely blotted everything out.

We need a guide who will make the promise of the light come alive for us.

Question for thought: Who has been a person who guided you to the light when you were stuck in darkness?

Come, O Holy One, for we wait upon you. And light the darkness of our hearts and lives so that we may know your love fully. Amen
