What is good?

Writer's picture: Allison WilcoxAllison Wilcox

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil; hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal; be ardent in spirit; serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; pursue hospitality to strangers. ~ Romans 12:9-21

Doesn't it seem like it is impossible to be "good" by everyone's standards?

In this highly polarized time, human beings throw curses as easily as breathing. Neighbor calls neighbor "evil" because they believe something differently or because they vote for someone different.

It looks even worse among our political leaders.

As of today, we now have a president who has used the following words publicly to speak about his enemies: slimeball, birdbrain, vermin, garbage, and scum.

And this is how he has referred to immigrants: not human, impure, rapists, pet-eaters, and animals.

Many think this is OK. That he is good.

By those standards then, who is good?

Paul breaks it down pretty simply; How do you know what is good? How do we know how to be good to each other?

Loving each other. Helping each other. Showing hospitality to strangers. Honoring each other.

You might be feeling down about all the bad that seems to be floating around. But hold fast to what is good.

Love each other.

And rejoice in hope. Because we have a God who walks with us through both the good and the bad.

Gracious God, may I live in hope this day and every day, relishing in the good of your creation and trusting your love, knowing that you do not leave me alone. May I love others just as dearly as you love me. Amen
