Befriending Death: Cloud of Witnesses

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith, who for the sake of the joy that was set before him endured the cross, disregarding its shame, and has taken his seat at the right hand of the throne of God. ~ Hebrews 12:1-2

I'm not a runner. My husband and my daughter both are. They both need to run. It's in their blood.

When my daughter was in high school she ran cross country, and every time I watched her I saw that determination to get to the finish line. To finish the race.

And as a good runner knows, running with that team can make or break the race for you. Running together, cheering each other on.

I watched both of them run marathons and was amazed at the camaraderie of the runners. Everyone cheering for each other.

Everyone wanting to get to the finish line, but wanting the others to get to the finish line as well.

That's our great cloud of witnesses. Cheering us on as we race this race of life. Knowing that the finish line will be amazing!

The prize for the race will indeed by amazing. But so is the race itself. Knowing that we are part of a team - holding each other, lifting each other, supporting each other.

Enjoy the race. And know that as you head toward the finish line, you aren't alone.

- Have you ever thought of life as a race?

- Who are those in your cloud of witnesses, supporting you and rooting for you - and preparing a place for you?

Holy One, lead me, push me, pull me, prompt me along this journey of faith. Keep my footsteps sure and my eyes fixed on the places you would send me. Amen
