Befriending Death: We are the Lord's

For we do not live to ourselves, and we do not die to ourselves. If we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord; so then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. For to this end Christ died and lived again, so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living. ~ Romans 14:7-9

We are the Lord's. No matter what.

That means in death as much as in life.

In the US, approximately 31% of people are somewhat afraid of death. And 11% very afraid of death. That's a lot of people.

But that means that roughly half of the population aren't very afraid of it.

What do you think makes the difference between these sets of people? Certainly, diagnosable anxiety has to be part of it.

Do you think fear of the unknown is also a part of it?

How comforting it should be then to be assured that we are known. That God knows us and so we can trust that as God's death is not something to be feared.

Just as Christ lived again, we can trust that our deaths as well will not be the end.

- Do you fear death? If so, what about it frightens you?

- What do you think Christ's resurrection has to say about death and life for you?

Holy One, lead me, push me, pull me, prompt me along this journey of faith. Keep my footsteps sure and my eyes fixed on the places you would send me. Amen
