For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. ~ Romans 8:38-39
There are a lot of things to fear.
Big, global things like death. Poverty. Leaders who are autocratic and tyrannical. Climate change and the extreme weather it brings. COVID 19. Terrorists. Gun violence.
And things that aren't as big in the world, but big in our lives: Job loss. The spot on our X-ray. The friend who won't speak to us anymore. Moving a parent into assisted living. Finding out a spouse had an affair. Worries about our children.
It can be overwhelming.
And we might ask "where is God?" in this.
Where is God?
Right with us. Next to us. Holding us. Walking beside us.
Loving us.
We can't be separated from a life that offers pain and suffering.
But we also can't be separated from a God who loves us through the pain and suffering.
A God who envelopes us in love that is bigger than all of the fears that surround us.
Free me from my fear, O God, that I may grasp fully onto your love. Amen
