In the middle ages, one of the groups who were most on the margins were the Romany people - called "gypsies." In the Disney film, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which is based on the novel by Victor Hugo, the gypsy, Esmerelda, sings a prayer asking for God's help for her people, who are outcasts.
