Happy are those whose way is blameless,
who walk in the law of the Lord.
Happy are those who keep his decrees,
who seek him with their whole heart,
who also do no wrong
but walk in his ways.
You have commanded your precepts
to be kept diligently.
O that my ways may be steadfast
in keeping your statutes!
Then I shall not be put to shame,
having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.
I will praise you with an upright heart,
when I learn your righteous ordinances.
I will observe your statutes;
do not utterly forsake me. ~ Psalm 119:1-8
There has been a lot of passages recently about the promise and importance of the law.
The law brings us toward the Kingdom of God. It gives us life. It gives us a path to walk upon.
And if can make us happy.
Not something we tend to think about with the law.
But when we think of the law as something that fosters love and relationship. how can it not bring about happiness?
A seminary professor I had put it this way: when you love someone, don't you want to please them? Make them happy? You don't want to tear them down or belittle them.
You want happiness for them.
And in their happiness, yours will grow as well.
That is true whether your beloved is a person.
Or God.
Set me free to love with your law, Holy One! Amen
