“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. ~ Matthew 5:9
It isn't enough to want peace, or to search for it. The call is to be doers of peace. Peacemakers. The salt and the leaven that create and grow peace: that make peace flavorful and rich.
I'm not sure about you, but for me that's a tall order. On many days, it's a struggle to find peace within myself.
To hear Jesus' words saying that peacemakers are blessed could sound punitive I suppose. As if Jesus is saying, "I won't bless you unless you are a peacemaker."
"I won't bless you unless you make room at the table."
OR
Jesus could be showing us what blessing is really all about. What it feels like. What it looks like.
It looks like peace. And it feels like bringing about peace.
It feels like sharing peace.
Jesus could be saying, "You want to know what it's like to be blessed? Make some peace, and you'll find out!
Generous and gracious God, open the doors of our hearts to peace so that we can make a place at the table for those who are usually left out. Amen
